Daniel 9:24 includes the purpose "to make reconciliation for iniquity," traditionally rendered from language that can also be translated as making atonement for wrongdoing. Within the prophecy, this is part of God's promised resolution of the problem of sin associated with the seventy sevens. The verse does not yet describe in detail how that atonement or reconciliation will be accomplished.

Romans 5:10 teaches that people who were God's enemies are reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, while 2 Corinthians 5:18-21 declares that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ and identifies Christ's sinless substitution as central to that work. These passages supply a strong Christian explanation of Daniel's redemptive language. Christians therefore see the atoning death of Jesus as the climactic means by which reconciliation for iniquity is accomplished.
