Genesis 5 repeatedly records the deaths of Adam's descendants, but the account of Enoch is strikingly different. Enoch is described as one who "walked with God," and instead of recording his death, Genesis states that God took him. Hebrews 11:5 later interprets this event to mean that Enoch was taken from earthly life without experiencing death.
Enoch's experience is best understood as a type or foreshadowing rather than a direct prediction of Christ's ascension. After His resurrection, Jesus was taken bodily into heaven and exalted to the right hand of God, as described in Mark 16:19 and more fully in Acts 1:9-11. There is therefore an important correspondence between the two events: Enoch's extraordinary departure demonstrates God's power to take a person from earthly life into His presence, while Christ's ascension is unique in its significance. Jesus ascends as the risen Lord who has conquered death and returns to the Father in glory.
