Isaiah 61 announces a Spirit-anointed figure who proclaims good news, liberty, healing, and the favorable year of the LORD. Jesus explicitly reads this passage in Nazareth and declares it fulfilled in their hearing.

The New Testament gives this connection especially strong support. The fulfillment reference in this table, Luke 4:16-21, uses, quotes, or closely applies Isaiah's language in relation to Jesus and supports the description that He would the Messiah would preach the good news. Accordingly, this entry may properly be presented as a substantial messianic fulfillment, while still allowing Isaiah's words to retain their original historical and literary setting.
