Isaiah 53 describes the rejected and suffering Servant who bears the sins of others, dies despite His innocence, is associated with the rich in burial, and afterward is vindicated. The New Testament repeatedly quotes and applies this chapter to Jesus.

The New Testament gives this connection especially strong support. The fulfillment reference in this table, Matt 27:57, uses, quotes, or closely applies Isaiah's language in relation to Jesus and supports the description that He would buried in a rich man's grave. Accordingly, this entry may properly be presented as a substantial messianic fulfillment, while still allowing Isaiah's words to retain their original historical and literary setting.
