Isaiah 49 presents the Servant as called from the womb, commissioned to restore Israel, and also made a light so that God's salvation reaches the ends of the earth.

The New Testament gives this connection especially strong support. The fulfillment reference in this table, John 8:12; Acts 13:47, uses, quotes, or closely applies Isaiah's language in relation to Jesus and supports the description that He would he is the Light of the Gentiles. Accordingly, this entry may properly be presented as a substantial messianic fulfillment, while still allowing Isaiah's words to retain their original historical and literary setting.
