Isaiah 9 moves from darkness to the hope of a coming Davidic ruler whose extraordinary titles, righteous government, and enduring kingdom make this one of Isaiah's central royal-messianic passages.

The New Testament gives this connection especially strong support. The fulfillment reference in this table, Matt 4:12-17, uses, quotes, or closely applies Isaiah's language in relation to Jesus and supports the description that He would his ministry to begin in Galilee. Accordingly, this entry may properly be presented as a substantial messianic fulfillment, while still allowing Isaiah's words to retain their original historical and literary setting.
