Psalm 118:22-23 declares that the stone rejected by the builders has become the chief cornerstone, an astonishing reversal accomplished by the LORD. In the psalm's original context the rejected stone may symbolize the vindication of Israel's king or people, but the New Testament repeatedly applies the image directly to Jesus.

Matthew 21:42 records Jesus quoting these verses after the parable of the wicked tenants and applying them to His rejection by Israel's leaders and the consequences that follow. Acts 4:11 and 1 Peter 2:7 make the identification equally explicit. Jesus is the stone rejected by the builders yet chosen and exalted by God as the cornerstone of His saving work and people. This is therefore a direct and well-attested messianic fulfillment.
