At Bethel God renews to Jacob the promises previously made to Abraham and Isaac. Jacob is promised numerous descendants, land, and the assurance that through his offspring all the families of the earth will be blessed. The covenant line is therefore narrowed once again: the promised blessing will proceed through Jacob, later named Israel.

Luke 3:34 includes Jacob in the genealogy of Jesus, demonstrating that Christ belongs historically to this promised family line. The Genesis passage is not a detailed prediction of Jesus' birth, but it is an essential part of the progressive identification of the Messiah's ancestry. The promised offspring is associated first with the woman, then with Shem, Abraham, Isaac, and now Jacob. From a Christian perspective, the genealogy of Jesus shows that the covenant promises were carried through precisely this line until they reached their climactic fulfillment in Christ.
