Psalm 91:11-12 promises God's angelic protection for the one who dwells in trust under the protection of the Most High. In its original context the promise describes God's care for the faithful and should not be understood as permission to manufacture danger in order to force God to intervene.

Luke 4:10-11 records the devil quoting these verses while tempting Jesus to throw Himself from the temple. The use of Psalm 91 in the temptation narrative associates the passage with Jesus, but importantly, Satan misuses it. Jesus refuses to test God and answers with Deuteronomy 6:16. Thus the passage is "identified as messianic" only in a qualified sense: the tempter applies it to Jesus as God's Son, while Jesus demonstrates perfect trust by rejecting a distorted application of the promise.
