Psalm 72:16 describes extraordinary abundance under the righteous king: grain flourishes even on mountain heights and the land becomes fruitful. The verse belongs to a picture of prosperity and blessing under ideal royal rule. It does not describe a grain dying in the ground.

John 12:24-25 uses a different agricultural image when Jesus compares His approaching death to a grain of wheat that falls into the earth and dies in order to bear much fruit. Because the images and purposes differ, Psalm 72:16 should not be presented as a direct prediction of Jesus' saying. At most, there is a broad thematic connection between the fruitful reign envisioned in Psalm 72 and the abundant spiritual fruit produced through Christ's death. The specific grain-of-wheat teaching originates in Jesus' own explanation of His sacrificial death.
