Explanation

Psalm 69:26 describes persecutors attacking the one whom God has struck and adding to the pain of the one God has wounded. The verse assumes that the sufferer's affliction ultimately lies within God's sovereign permission while condemning those who cruelly intensify it.

John 18:11 records Jesus accepting the "cup" the Father has given Him, and John 17:4 presents Him as completing the work entrusted to Him. Neither passage quotes Psalm 69:26, so the relationship is theological rather than direct. Christian interpretation sees the cross as both an act of human wickedness and an event occurring within God's saving purpose. The psalm's distinction between God's sovereign dealing and the guilt of persecutors helps illuminate that paradox, though the specific doctrine of Christ bearing divine judgment is established more directly elsewhere in Scripture.
