Psalm 69:14-20 is an intense prayer from a sufferer who feels overwhelmed as though sinking into deep waters. He pleads for rescue, experiences reproach and shame, and finds no comforter. The imagery expresses profound emotional and spiritual anguish rather than describing a particular location or event.

Matthew 26:36-45 records Jesus' agony in Gethsemane, where He is deeply sorrowful and repeatedly prays to the Father as the cross approaches. Matthew does not cite Psalm 69 in this scene, so the relationship is typological. The psalm nevertheless provides fitting language for the anguish of God's righteous servant surrounded by hostility and facing death. Jesus' prayer in the garden embodies this pattern with unique intensity as He willingly submits to the Father's redemptive purpose.
