Genesis 22 concludes the testing of Abraham with a renewed promise that through his offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed. The immediate context includes the multiplication of Abraham's descendants, but it also continues the universal promise first given in Genesis 12:3. God's covenant purpose through Abraham's family is intended ultimately to bring blessing far beyond Israel itself.

Galatians 3:16 interprets the promise christologically, identifying the climactic "offspring" of Abraham with Christ. Jesus is descended from Abraham through Isaac, and through Him the blessing promised to the nations takes its fullest redemptive form. The Genesis promise therefore operates on more than one level: it concerns the historical descendants of Abraham, yet within the New Testament's interpretation it also points toward the particular descendant through whom salvation would be extended to Jews and Gentiles alike.
