Psalm 40:2-5 celebrates deliverance from a "pit of destruction" and the placing of the psalmist's feet upon a secure rock. The result is a new song of praise and a testimony that causes others to trust in the LORD. In David's own experience, the imagery describes rescue from overwhelming danger rather than literal resurrection from death.

John 20:20 records the disciples' joy when the risen Jesus appears to them and shows them His wounds. The Gospel does not cite Psalm 40:2-5 as resurrection prophecy. The connection is therefore typological: David's figurative emergence from the pit into renewed praise anticipates, at the level of biblical pattern, the far greater deliverance manifested in Christ's actual resurrection. The disciples' joy corresponds naturally to the psalm's movement from distress to public celebration of God's saving work.
