Gethsemane

Gethsemane was a place on or near the Mount of Olives where Jesus went with His disciples after the Last Supper on the night of His arrest. Matthew and Mark call it Gethsemane, while Luke describes Jesus going as usual to the Mount of Olives and John refers to a garden across the Kidron Valley.

There Jesus prayed in profound anguish while His disciples struggled to remain awake. Judas subsequently arrived with the party that arrested Jesus.

An ancient Christian tradition locates Gethsemane near the foot of the western slope of the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem's Old City.

Biblical Significance

Matthew 26 and Mark 14 describe Jesus entering Gethsemane with His disciples after the Last Supper. Taking Peter, James, and John farther with Him, Jesus became deeply sorrowful and prayed that, if possible, the cup before Him might pass, while submitting Himself to the Father's will.

Luke 22 describes His anguish and prayer on the Mount of Olives. John 18 states that Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with His disciples and entered a garden that Judas also knew because Jesus had often met there with His followers.

Judas arrived with an armed party and identified Jesus, leading to His arrest and the sequence of trials culminating in the crucifixion.

Historical Background

The name Gethsemane probably derives from words meaning "oil press," fitting the olive cultivation historically associated with the Mount of Olives.

Early Christian pilgrims and writers preserved traditions concerning locations connected with Jesus' prayer and arrest on the Mount of Olives. Churches and shrines were subsequently constructed in the area during Byzantine, Crusader, and modern periods.

The present Church of All Nations stands beside the traditional garden and incorporates remains of earlier Christian buildings. The long history of veneration demonstrates an ancient association of this general area with Gethsemane, although it cannot establish the exact spot where Jesus prayed.

Modern Identification

The traditional Garden of Gethsemane lies at the western foot of the Mount of Olives across the Kidron Valley from Jerusalem. The general setting corresponds well with the Gospel descriptions.

The exact boundaries of the first-century property are unknown. Ancient olive trees within the traditional garden contribute strongly to its visual character, but individual living trees cannot simply be identified as eyewitnesses to the events of Jesus' arrest.
