Micah 1 describes judgment advancing through towns of Judah and employs wordplay based upon the names of several communities.
Zaanan appears alongside Shaphir and Beth-ezel. The inhabitants of Zaanan are described as not coming out, apparently portraying a population unable or unwilling to leave its threatened town.
Zaanan is generally regarded as the same place as Zenan, which Joshua lists among towns in the lowland territory of Judah.
