Nazareth

Nazareth was a Jewish village in the hills of Lower Galilee and the hometown in which Jesus grew up. Although a small and relatively obscure settlement during the early first century, Nazareth became one of the best-known locations in Christianity because of its association with Jesus and His family.

The Gospels identify Jesus repeatedly as Jesus of Nazareth. Luke records the announcement to Mary at Nazareth and describes Jesus returning there after His childhood. Jesus later taught in the synagogue of His hometown but encountered rejection.

Ancient Nazareth lies beneath and around the center of the modern city of Nazareth in northern Israel.

Biblical Significance

Luke records the angel Gabriel being sent to Nazareth to announce to Mary that she would conceive and bear Jesus. After Jesus' birth at Bethlehem and the family's subsequent experiences, He was raised at Nazareth.

Jesus became so closely associated with the town that "Jesus of Nazareth" became one of His most familiar designations.

At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus returned to Nazareth and taught in the synagogue. Luke describes Him reading from Isaiah and declaring the Scripture fulfilled, after which opposition arose among those who had known Him.

Nathanael's question, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" reflects the town's apparent lack of prominence rather than evidence that the settlement did not exist.

Historical Background

Nazareth was a small Jewish settlement in Lower Galilee during the early Roman period. It is not named in the Old Testament, Josephus, or the earliest rabbinic geographical lists, reflecting its limited political importance.

Archaeological investigation has nevertheless demonstrated occupation during the period of Jesus. Rock-cut agricultural installations, storage features, tombs, pottery, and domestic remains illuminate the life of the early settlement.

The evidence indicates a predominantly Jewish community engaged in agriculture and village life. Later Christian tradition established churches and pilgrimage sites around locations associated with Mary, Joseph, and Jesus.

Modern Identification

Biblical Nazareth is securely identified with modern Nazareth in Lower Galilee.

Modern construction covers much of the ancient settlement, but archaeological remains beneath and around the Church of the Annunciation, the Sisters of Nazareth site, and other locations confirm occupation during the early Roman period.

Specific traditional identifications, such as a particular house as the childhood home of Jesus, cannot presently be proven archaeologically even though the first-century settlement itself is firmly established.
