Joshua 15 lists Mareshah among the towns belonging to Judah in the Shephelah.
After the division of the kingdom, Rehoboam fortified Mareshah along with other strategic cities of Judah. These fortifications helped protect approaches from the coastal plain toward the Judean hill country.
Second Chronicles 14 describes Zerah the Cushite advancing with a large army as far as Mareshah. King Asa of Judah met the invading force in the Valley of Zephathah and cried to the Lord for help. Judah defeated the enemy and pursued them toward Gerar.
The prophet Micah later mentioned Mareshah in an oracle of judgment involving towns of the Shephelah.
