Kabzeel

Kabzeel was a town in the extreme south of the territory of Judah, in the region bordering the Negev and Edom. It is particularly remembered as the hometown of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, one of David's most distinguished warriors.

Joshua lists Kabzeel among the southern towns allotted to Judah. After the Babylonian exile, a settlement called Jekabzeel appears among the places reoccupied by the people of Judah and is generally understood to represent the same town.

The precise location of Kabzeel remains uncertain. Khirbet Hora, northeast of Beersheba, has been proposed, but the identification should be treated as tentative.

Biblical Significance

Joshua 15:21 lists Kabzeel among the towns belonging to Judah in the extreme south toward the boundary of Edom.

Kabzeel is best known as the home of Benaiah son of Jehoiada. Second Samuel 23 describes Benaiah as a valiant warrior who performed remarkable exploits, including killing a lion in a pit on a snowy day and defeating an imposing Egyptian warrior.

Benaiah became commander of David's bodyguard and later supported Solomon during the struggle over the succession to David's throne. Solomon eventually appointed him commander of the army.

Nehemiah 11:25 mentions Jekabzeel among settlements occupied by Judeans after the exile, a name generally regarded as a variant or later form of Kabzeel.

Historical Background

Kabzeel belonged to the southernmost settlement zone of Judah, where cultivated land gradually gave way to the more arid Negev. Communities in this region occupied an important frontier between Judah, Edom, and desert populations farther south.

The biblical lists indicate that Kabzeel belonged to a network of southern Judean settlements rather than being one of the major fortified cities of the kingdom.

No inscription identifying Kabzeel has been recovered from a proposed archaeological site, and its reconstruction therefore depends primarily upon biblical geography and preservation or comparison of ancient place names.

Modern Identification

The precise location of Kabzeel has not been established. A frequently cited proposal identifies it with Khirbet Hora, approximately six miles northeast of Beersheba.

This proposal fits the general requirement that Kabzeel lie in the southern territory of Judah toward Edom, but it lacks the direct epigraphic confirmation available for sites such as Gibeon or Ekron.

AVWJ should therefore describe Khirbet Hora as a proposed identification rather than the certain location of biblical Kabzeel.
