Biography

When Joab's forces besieged Abel Beth-maacah in pursuit of Sheba, a wise woman called from the city and asked to speak with Joab. She appealed to the city's reputation for wisdom and challenged the destruction of a 'mother in Israel.' After learning that Joab sought only Sheba, she promised that his head would be thrown over the wall. She persuaded the people, Sheba was executed, and Joab ended the siege.

The wise woman of Abel demonstrates courageous civic leadership and skillful negotiation. Her intervention prevented the destruction of an entire city while bringing a dangerous rebellion to an end.
