Shebna was a high official in Hezekiah's government whom Isaiah rebuked for pride and foretold would be removed from office.
Biography
Isaiah 22 addresses Shebna, the steward over the royal household, condemning his self-important preparation of an elaborate tomb and announcing that God would violently remove him. Isaiah says Eliakim son of Hilkiah would receive his office and authority. Later, during Sennacherib's crisis, Shebna appears as secretary alongside Eliakim, suggesting the predicted demotion had occurred.
Biblical Significance
Shebna's story is a warning against pride and self-exaltation in public office. Authority is portrayed as a stewardship that God can remove and entrust to another.
