Later Christian infancy tradition, particularly the Protoevangelium of James, introduces a midwife and Salome in connection with the birth of Jesus. Matthew and Luke, the canonical Gospels that narrate Jesus' birth, name no midwife and contain no episode involving Salome in this role.
