Micah of Moresheth was an eighth-century BC prophet who denounced injustice and idolatry while proclaiming judgment, restoration, and the coming ruler from Bethlehem.
Biography
Micah prophesied during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah of Judah and addressed both Samaria and Jerusalem. He condemned corrupt rulers, greedy landowners, false prophets, and religious hypocrisy, warning that covenant rebellion would bring devastating judgment. Yet Micah also proclaimed restoration: a remnant would be gathered, nations would come to the Lord's mountain, and a ruler would come from Bethlehem whose greatness would reach to the ends of the earth. The book closes with confidence in God's pardoning mercy and faithfulness to His covenant promises.
Biblical Significance
Micah combines uncompromising calls for justice and covenant faithfulness with strong messianic hope. His Bethlehem prophecy is applied in Matthew 2 to the birthplace of Jesus, while Micah 6:8 remains a concise expression of humble covenant living.
