Immanuel

Biography

Isaiah 7:14 announces that a young woman or virgin will conceive and bear a son called Immanuel in the setting of the Syro-Ephraimite crisis. Matthew 1:22-23 quotes the prophecy in connection with the virgin conception and birth of Jesus, explicitly translating the name as 'God with us.'

Biblical Significance

Immanuel is better treated as a prophetic title or designation than as a separate biblical person. In Christian interpretation Matthew identifies its fullest significance with Jesus.
