Holofernes is the Assyrian general defeated by Judith in the deuterocanonical Book of Judith.
Biography
In Judith, Holofernes commands the invading army and besieges Bethulia. Judith enters his camp, gains his confidence, and beheads him while he is intoxicated, throwing his forces into confusion. Holofernes does not appear in the Protestant Old Testament canon.
Biblical Significance
For AVWJ this figure should be clearly labeled deuterocanonical rather than presented as a character from the Protestant biblical canon.
