Erastus was a Christian associated with Paul and identified in Romans as the city treasurer or official; Scripture does not call him one of the Seventy disciples.
Biography
Romans 16:23 sends greetings from Erastus, described as the city's treasurer or director of public works. Acts 19:22 also names an Erastus whom Paul sent with Timothy into Macedonia, and 2 Timothy 4:20 says Erastus remained at Corinth. These references may concern the same man, though the identification cannot be proved from the text alone. Later Christian tradition included an Erastus among the Seventy, but the New Testament itself does not make that claim.
Biblical Significance
Erastus illustrates the presence of Christians in civic and administrative life during the apostolic period. His database entry should separate New Testament information from later traditions about the Seventy.
