biblical character, servant of Abraham (Book of Genesis)
Eliezer is traditionally identified as Abraham's senior household servant, although Genesis 24 does not actually name the servant sent to obtain a wife for Isaac.
Biography
Genesis 15 names Eliezer of Damascus in Abraham's complaint that a household member would inherit because Abraham had no son. Genesis 24 later describes Abraham's oldest servant, who managed his possessions, being sent to Mesopotamia to find a wife for Isaac. The servant prayerfully sought God's guidance, met Rebekah at the well, negotiated with her family, and brought her to Isaac. The chapter never explicitly calls this servant Eliezer, so the common identification is plausible but not stated outright by the text.
Biblical Significance
Whether or not Genesis 24's servant is Eliezer, the episode models faithful stewardship, prayer for guidance, and recognition of God's providence. AVWJ should distinguish explicit biblical identification from traditional inference.
