Cozbi was a Midianite woman killed with the Israelite Zimri during Israel's sin at Baal of Peor.
Biography
Numbers 25 identifies Cozbi as the daughter of Zur, a leader of a Midianite clan. During Israel's apostasy at Peor, Zimri son of Salu openly brought her into the Israelite camp. Phinehas followed them and killed both with a spear, bringing an end to the plague. Numbers 31 later recalls the Midianite role in the Peor incident and names Zur among the Midianite kings killed in Israel's campaign.
Biblical Significance
Cozbi's story belongs to the crisis at Peor, where idolatry and sexual immorality brought covenant judgment. Her death with Zimri forms the immediate setting for the priestly commendation of Phinehas.
