one of the eunuchs in service of the Persian king Ahasuerus, according to the Book of Esther
Bigthan was one of the Persian king's eunuchs whose assassination plot was uncovered by Mordecai in the Book of Esther.
Biography
Esther 2 says Bigthan and Teresh, two royal eunuchs who guarded the doorway, became angry and plotted to assassinate King Ahasuerus. Mordecai learned of the conspiracy and informed Queen Esther, who reported it to the king in Mordecai's name. The matter was investigated, found true, and the conspirators were executed. The event was recorded in the royal chronicles. Later, the king's sleepless reading of those chronicles exposed the fact that Mordecai had never been honored, setting in motion the reversal of Haman's plot.
Biblical Significance
Bigthan's failed conspiracy becomes an important link in Esther's providential chain of events. Recording Mordecai's service ultimately contributes to the deliverance of the Jews.
