Benjamin
Biblical character, youngest son of Jacob
Benjamin was the youngest son of Jacob and Rachel, full brother of Joseph, and ancestor of the tribe of Benjamin.
Biography
Rachel died while giving birth to Benjamin near Bethlehem. She called him Ben-oni, 'son of my sorrow,' but Jacob named him Benjamin. Years later Joseph, unrecognized as ruler in Egypt, insisted that his brothers bring Benjamin when they returned for food. Jacob was deeply reluctant to risk Rachel's remaining son, and Judah pledged himself for Benjamin's safety. Joseph used Benjamin in the final test of his brothers by placing his silver cup in Benjamin's sack. Judah's willingness to become a slave in Benjamin's place demonstrated a profound change in the brothers, after which Joseph revealed himself.
Biblical Significance
Benjamin's story is central to the reconciliation of Joseph and his brothers and to Jacob's family history. His descendants became one of Israel's tribes, later producing figures including King Saul and the apostle Paul.
