pretty woman of biblical Shunem chosen to be a servant to King David (First Book of Kings)
Abishag was a young woman from Shunem chosen to attend the elderly King David during his final days.
Biography
First Kings 1 says David's servants sought a young woman to care for him and keep him warm, and Abishag the Shunammite was selected. The text explicitly says David did not have sexual relations with her. After David's death, Adonijah asked Bathsheba to request Abishag as his wife. Solomon interpreted the request as politically significant, effectively a renewed claim to the royal succession, and ordered Adonijah's execution.
Biblical Significance
Abishag's story belongs to the transition from David to Solomon. Her later position in Adonijah's request illustrates how possession of a deceased king's household could carry dynastic implications in the ancient royal setting.
