Alexander the coppersmith was a man Paul warned Timothy about because he had done Paul great harm and strongly opposed the apostolic message.
Biography
In 2 Timothy 4:14-15 Paul tells Timothy that Alexander the coppersmith did him much harm and warns Timothy to be on guard because Alexander strongly opposed their words. Paul leaves judgment to the Lord. Scripture does not establish with certainty whether this Alexander is identical with the Alexander mentioned in 1 Timothy 1:20, whom Paul says he handed over to Satan with Hymenaeus, or with other men named Alexander in Acts.
Biblical Significance
Alexander the coppersmith illustrates the real personal opposition faced in apostolic ministry. Distinct New Testament men named Alexander should not be merged without evidence.
