Daniel 1 identifies Azariah among the young Judean exiles selected for royal training in Babylon and says the chief official gave him the name Abednego. With Daniel, Hananiah, and Mishael he refused the royal food and remained faithful to God. In Daniel 3, Abednego, Shadrach, and Meshach refused Nebuchadnezzar's command to worship the golden image. They declared that God could deliver them, but that even without deliverance they would not serve the king's gods. Cast into an intensely heated furnace, they emerged unharmed.
