Abaddon
Abaddon is a biblical term meaning destruction and, in Revelation 9, the Hebrew name of the angel of the abyss; it is not presented as an ordinary human figure.
Biography
In the Old Testament, Abaddon is used poetically for the realm or condition of destruction, often alongside Sheol or Death. Revelation 9:11 uses the term differently when describing the demonic locust plague released from the abyss at the fifth trumpet. The locusts have as king 'the angel of the abyss,' whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon and in Greek is Apollyon, both conveying the idea of destruction or destroyer. Revelation does not identify this angel as Satan, nor does it provide a personal history beyond this apocalyptic role.
Biblical Significance
For AVWJ, Abaddon should be clearly distinguished from human biblical figures and from Satan unless the text itself makes such an identification. The term's importance lies in biblical imagery of destruction and in Revelation's angel of the abyss.
