Biblical prophet and main figure of the First Book of Samuel
Samuel was a prophet, judge, and national leader who guided Israel through the transition from the period of the judges to the monarchy and anointed both Saul and David.
Biography
Samuel was born to Hannah after years of barrenness and was dedicated to the Lord at Shiloh under Eli. As a boy he heard God call him and received a message of judgment against Eli's house. Samuel grew as a recognized prophet throughout Israel. He called the people away from idols, interceded for them, and judged Israel. When the elders demanded a king, Samuel warned them about royal power but obeyed God's instruction to grant their request. He anointed Saul and later confronted him for disobedience, declaring that obedience is better than sacrifice. After God rejected Saul, Samuel secretly anointed the young David at Bethlehem. Samuel died before Saul's final battle and was mourned by Israel.
Biblical Significance
Samuel is the pivotal prophetic figure between judges and kings. His ministry establishes the principle that Israel's kings remain subject to God's word, and his anointing of David sets in motion the royal line central to later messianic hope.
