Leah
Biblical matriarch
Leah was the first wife of Jacob, sister of Rachel, and mother of six of Jacob's sons and his daughter Dinah.
Biography
Jacob intended to marry Rachel after serving Laban for seven years, but Laban substituted Leah at the wedding. Jacob then married Rachel as well, creating a painful household rivalry. Genesis says that when the Lord saw Leah was unloved, He opened her womb. Leah bore Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, expressing through their names her longing for affection and then praise to God. After a period of barrenness she later bore Issachar, Zebulun, and Dinah. Through Levi she became ancestress of Israel's priestly tribe, and through Judah of the royal line. Jacob later said that Leah was buried in the family tomb at Machpelah.
Biblical Significance
Leah's story shows God's attention to the overlooked and unloved. Although she lived in the shadow of Jacob's preference for Rachel, her children became foundational to Israel, including the tribes of Levi and Judah.
