Jehoram, or Joram, son of Ahab was king of northern Israel and reigned during much of the prophet Elisha's ministry.
Biography
Jehoram removed the particular pillar of Baal associated with his father but continued the sins of Jeroboam. His reign included Moab's rebellion, conflict with Aram, and several episodes involving Elisha. During a campaign against Moab he joined Jehoshaphat of Judah and received prophetic help from Elisha. Later Elisha repeatedly warned Israel of Aramean movements and was involved during the severe siege of Samaria. Jehoram was wounded fighting Hazael's forces at Ramoth-gilead and returned to Jezreel. There Jehu, newly anointed to destroy Ahab's house, confronted and killed him, casting his body onto Naboth's field.
Biblical Significance
Jehoram's death brought the house of Ahab toward its prophesied end. His reign also provides the political setting for many narratives demonstrating God's power through Elisha despite Israel's continuing unfaithfulness.
