Elah was the son of Baasha and fourth king of northern Israel. He reigned briefly before being assassinated by his chariot commander Zimri.
Biography
Elah succeeded Baasha and reigned in Tirzah for about two years. While the army was again engaged at Gibbethon, Elah was drinking in the house of Arza, who was in charge of the palace at Tirzah. Zimri, commander of half his chariots, conspired against him and killed him. After taking the throne, Zimri destroyed Baasha's entire household, fulfilling the word spoken by the prophet Jehu concerning Baasha's dynasty.
Biblical Significance
Elah's assassination continues Kings' picture of instability in the northern monarchy and demonstrates the fulfillment of prophetic judgment against Baasha's house.
