Nadab of Israel

Biography

Nadab succeeded Jeroboam and reigned for about two years. First Kings evaluates him negatively because he continued the sins by which his father had led Israel into idolatry. While Nadab and Israel were besieging the Philistine city of Gibbethon, Baasha of Issachar conspired against him and killed him. Baasha then became king and destroyed the entire house of Jeroboam, fulfilling the judgment previously announced through the prophet Ahijah.

Biblical Significance

Nadab's brief reign demonstrates the fulfillment of prophetic judgment on Jeroboam's dynasty and begins the repeated pattern of violent dynastic change that characterized much of the northern kingdom.
