Seth
biblical figure, third son of Adam
Seth was the son born to Adam and Eve after the death of Abel. Genesis presents him as the son through whom the family line leading from Adam to Noah continued. Eve received his birth as God's provision after Abel had been killed by Cain. Seth later became the father of Enosh and lived for many years, having other sons and daughters.
Biography
Genesis 4 introduces Seth after the tragic account of Cain and Abel. Eve named him Seth and understood his birth as God's appointment of another offspring in place of Abel. Genesis 5 places Seth in the genealogy from Adam to Noah, stating that Adam fathered him in his own likeness and image. Seth became the father of Enosh and, according to the genealogy, lived 912 years. Scripture records no speeches, journeys, or individual acts of Seth beyond his place in the family line. His importance is therefore genealogical rather than narrative: through Seth the line from Adam continues toward Noah and, in Luke's genealogy, ultimately toward Jesus.
Biblical Significance
Seth is significant as the continuation of Adam's family line after Abel's death. His appearance immediately after the violence of Cain's story introduces a note of continuity and hope. The genealogies of Genesis and Luke place him in the ancestry that links humanity's beginnings with later biblical history and, ultimately, with Christ.
