Ezra was a priest and skilled scribe who led a group of Jewish exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem and devoted himself to studying, practicing, and teaching the Law of the Lord.
Biography
Ezra 7 introduces Ezra as a descendant of Aaron and a scribe skilled in the Law of Moses. During the reign of Artaxerxes he received royal authorization to travel to Jerusalem with returning exiles, resources for the Temple, and authority to establish administration according to God's law. Ezra proclaimed a fast for protection on the journey and refused to request a military escort after testifying to God's care. In Jerusalem he confronted the community over intermarriage with surrounding peoples. Nehemiah 8 later depicts Ezra reading the Law publicly to the assembled people while Levites helped explain its meaning, producing repentance, worship, and renewed covenant observance.
Biblical Significance
Ezra was central to the postexilic restoration of Israel's life around Scripture, worship, and covenant identity. His example of studying, doing, and teaching God's law became an enduring model for biblical instruction.
