Brothers of Jesus

New Testament
A Visit With Jesus
The brothers of Jesus are named in the Gospels as James, Joses or Joseph, Judas or Jude, and Simon, with unnamed sisters also mentioned. During Jesus' earthly ministry His brothers did not fully understand or believe in Him, but after the resurrection they appear among the believers, and James and Jude became especially important in the early church.

Biography

Matthew 13 and Mark 6 identify Jesus' brothers as James, Joseph or Joses, Simon, and Judas, and also mention His sisters. John 7 says that at that stage even His brothers did not believe in Him, while Mark 3 records members of His family coming during a period when crowds surrounded Him. The situation changes after the resurrection. Paul states in 1 Corinthians 15 that the risen Jesus appeared specifically to James. Acts 1 then places Jesus' brothers with the apostles, Mary, and other believers in prayer before Pentecost. James subsequently became a leading figure in the Jerusalem church, while the Epistle of Jude identifies its author as a brother of James. Christian traditions differ over the precise family relationship represented by the Greek term for brothers, but the New Testament itself consistently presents these men as Jesus' brothers within His family circle.

Biblical Significance

The brothers of Jesus provide a striking movement from misunderstanding or unbelief to post-resurrection faith. Their presence in the early church, especially James' leadership, supplies an important line of testimony to the reality and transforming impact of Jesus' resurrection.
