Ananias and Sapphira
Ananias and Sapphira were a married couple in the Jerusalem church who sold property but deceptively represented part of the proceeds as though it were the whole amount. Their sudden deaths after Peter exposed the deception became a sobering early lesson about hypocrisy and lying to God.
Biography
Acts 5 places the story of Ananias and Sapphira immediately after descriptions of voluntary generosity in the early Jerusalem church. The couple sold a piece of property and, with mutual knowledge, kept back part of the price while Ananias presented the remainder to the apostles as though it represented the full proceeds. Peter emphasized that the property had remained theirs and that the sin was not failure to surrender every coin but deliberate deception: Ananias had lied to the Holy Spirit and to God. Ananias fell down and died. About three hours later Sapphira arrived without knowing what had happened. Peter gave her an opportunity to state the sale price; she repeated the deception and likewise died. The result was great fear throughout the church and among all who heard of the events.
Biblical Significance
The account emphasizes the holiness of God and the seriousness of hypocrisy at a formative moment in the church's life. It also makes clear that Christian generosity was voluntary; the judgment concerned deliberate spiritual fraud. The severity of the episode underscores that the presence and work of the Holy Spirit are not to be treated casually.
