Zacharias
People & Groups • New Testament
Zacharias was a priest of the course of Abijah and the husband of Elisabeth. The angel Gabriel announced that they would have John the Baptist; Zacharias was temporarily unable to speak because he did not believe the message.
Biblical Usage
While serving at the temple, Zacharias received Gabriel’s announcement that Elisabeth would bear John, the forerunner of the Messiah. Because he did not believe the message, he became unable to speak until John was born and named. His speech was then restored, and he praised God. The name is also associated with the “son of Barachias” mentioned by Jesus.
