Tablet
Scripture • Both
A tablet was a flat surface of stone, wood, clay, metal, or another material used for writing or engraving. Scripture refers to tablets containing God’s commandments and figuratively to writing upon the heart.
Biblical Usage
Tablets appear in Scripture as the stone tablets containing the Decalogue, as writing surfaces contrasted with rolls, and figuratively as the tablets of the heart. Ezekiel uses a clay tablet in connection with a representation of Jerusalem. Zacharias wrote upon a wooden tablet, and bronze tablets are mentioned in 1 Maccabees.
