SOUL
Doctrine & Theology • Both
The soul in Scripture may mean the living person, life, self, appetite, emotions, or the inner seat of personal identity. It is distinguished from the body and, in important passages, from the spirit, and is spoken of in relation to death, salvation, and eternal destiny.
Biblical Usage
The soul is spoken of as departing at death, needing deliverance from the pit or Sheol, and being saved. In the New Testament, Christ gives His soul, or individual life, as a ransom. The soul is also the subject of hunger, weariness, grief, love, anguish, and eternal concern.
