Shinar

Places & Geography • Old Testament
Shinar was the ancient Hebrew name for the alluvial country of Babylonia, or southern Mesopotamia. Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh were associated with this land, where the tower of Babel was built.
Biblical Usage
Shinar is the land where Nimrod’s kingdom began and where migrants from the East settled and built Babel and its tower. It is also named in later prophetic references. The biblical form refers broadly to Babylonia rather than only to one city.
