JUBILEE YEAR
Law & Covenant • Old Testament
The Jubilee Year was every fiftieth year in Israel, proclaimed by trumpet on the Day of Atonement. It provided liberty for servants, restoration of hereditary property, and rest for the land, declaring that the land ultimately belonged to God.
Biblical Usage
The Jubilee declared that Israelites belonged to God and that the land ultimately belonged to Him. Its liberty and restoration were understood as pointing toward the removal of bondage and the restoration of what sin had perverted.
