Joab
People & Groups • Old Testament
Joab was David’s nephew and commander of Israel’s army. He achieved major victories but committed the murders of Abner and Amasa and helped arrange Uriah’s death; he later supported Adonijah and was executed by Solomon.
Biblical Usage
Joab served David throughout much of his reign, leading Israel in wars against Syria, Ammon, and Edom and participating in the capture of Jerusalem and Rabbah. He helped restore Absalom, remained loyal during Absalom’s revolt, and later opposed David’s census. His support of Adonijah led to his death at the altar by Solomon’s command. The name also belongs to a Judahite associated with Ge-harashim and to a family of returned exiles.
