Ishmael was Abraham’s son by Hagar and the father of twelve tribal ancestors. He became the forefather of peoples inhabiting the deserts north and east of Canaan; another Ishmael later murdered Gedaliah.

Ishmael was circumcised at thirteen and became the subject of God’s care after being sent away with Hagar. He is distinguished from Isaac, the child of promise, and his descendants appear in later biblical narratives as Ishmaelites.
